Beyond Verification

The deeper question is not simply who we are, but who recognises us, what they recognise us for, and how much of that recognition we choose to reveal

The Internet began with machines talking to machines.

Then it became a place where people could talk to one another.

Today, it is increasingly becoming a place where people, organisations, institutions, devices and autonomous systems need to establish trust with one another.

That creates a problem.

Most of the Internet still relies on an old model of identity: the account.

You create an account with a platform. The platform assigns you an identity. It stores your relationships. It decides what information accompanies your identity. It can verify you, suspend you, restore you or erase you.

The result is an Internet where much of our digital identity is effectively rented from platforms.

A different model is now emerging.

It is built around decentralised identifiers, verifiable credentials, cryptographic proofs, self-sovereign identity and, increasingly, the possibility of carrying relationships and endorsements between different digital environments.

But the most interesting development may not be identity itself.

It may be recognition.

Identity Already Exists

Digital identity is sometimes discussed as though identification were about to be introduced into an otherwise anonymous world.

It isn't.

Identity systems have existed for a very long time.

Governments issue national identity documents, passports, driving licences, residence permits and other credentials. The approaches vary enormously between countries.

Some countries operate centralised national identity systems.

Others deliberately maintain multiple documents and institutions.

Some provide sophisticated government-backed digital identities.

Others rely primarily on physical documents and decentralised verification.

There is no single global model.

But there is a common fact:

modern societies already have identity infrastructure.

And increasingly, that infrastructure is digital.

Modern biometric passports, for example, contain an embedded contactless chip capable of storing and communicating information associated with the document and its holder. A physical document can therefore also function as a machine-readable cryptographic credential.

The question is not whether identity belongs in the digital world.

It already does.

The question is:

Who controls digital identity, and how should it be used?

From Accounts to Identifiers

The account-based Internet was convenient because platforms handled identity for us.

But convenience came with a trade-off.

Your identity became inseparable from the platform that issued it.

Self-Sovereign Identity, or SSI, proposes a different direction.

SSI is not a single technology or protocol. It is an approach to digital identity in which individuals have greater control over their identifiers, credentials and personal information.

One important component of this emerging ecosystem is the Decentralized Identifier, or DID.

The W3C DID standard provides a framework for identifiers that can be decoupled from traditional centralised identity providers. A DID can be associated with cryptographic verification methods and services that allow other parties to interact with and verify that identity.

This changes the basic relationship.

Instead of:

Platform → gives you identity

we can move towards:

Person → controls identity → presents it to platforms, communities and institutions

That distinction may become increasingly important as people move between digital environments.

Proving Something Without Revealing Everything

An identifier alone is not enough.

Knowing that a cryptographic key belongs to someone does not tell us whether that person is a doctor, a student, a citizen, a member of an organisation or a participant in a particular community.

This is where Verifiable Credentials become important.

The W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model provides a standardised framework for representing cryptographically verifiable claims. In its simplest form, there are three roles:

Issuer.

Someone who makes a claim.

Holder.

The person or entity to whom the claim relates.

Verifier.

The party that wants to verify the claim.

The model became a W3C Recommendation in 2025.

This creates an important possibility.

Instead of giving an institution your entire identity, you could potentially provide evidence of the particular attribute that matters.

You don't necessarily need to reveal everything you know about yourself to prove one thing about yourself.

That is a profound change in the architecture of trust.

Beyond “Verified”

The modern Internet has become obsessed with verification.

A blue tick.

A verified account.

A verified organisation.

A verified document.

A verified person.

But verification is an incomplete concept.

The more interesting question is:

Verified by whom?

And immediately afterwards:

Verified for what purpose?

A government may verify that someone is a citizen.

A university may verify that someone holds a degree.

An employer may verify professional experience.

A community may recognise someone as a member.

A friend may vouch for someone's character.

A citizen assembly may establish someone's eligibility to participate.

These are all forms of recognition.

But they are not the same kind of recognition.

Trust is contextual.

The Endorsement Layer

This is where ThEndorSemenT is interested.

We believe there is an important layer between identity and trust:

endorsement.

Identity can establish:

This is the entity controlling this identifier.

A credential can establish:

This claim was issued by this authority.

An endorsement adds another dimension:

This person, community or institution is willing to stand behind this relationship or claim.

That distinction matters.

A person does not become trustworthy simply because they possess an identity.

A credential does not become universally meaningful simply because it is cryptographically signed.

Trust emerges through relationships.

Someone recognises you.

Someone vouches for you.

Someone has worked with you.

Someone has admitted you into a community.

Someone has certified you.

Someone has chosen to associate their own reputation with yours.

The result is not merely an identity.

It is a web of recognition.

Trust Is a Graph

Imagine a digital identity not as a profile page, but as a node.

Around it are relationships.

People.

Communities.

Institutions.

Credentials.

Projects.

Contributions.

Endorsements.

Each relationship can carry different meaning.

One organisation might recognise you as a member.

Another might recognise you as a contributor.

A university might recognise your education.

A community might endorse your participation.

A government might establish a legal attribute.

None of these claims has to define the whole person.

Together, however, they form something much richer:

a network of trust.

This is fundamentally different from the reputation systems operated by today's platforms.

A platform might calculate a score.

A decentralised ecosystem could instead allow participants to carry evidence of relationships.

Your Relationships Should Not Automatically Belong to Someone Else

This leads to another question.

If relationships are so important to identity, who owns the graph formed by those relationships?

Today, major platforms construct enormous social graphs from our activity.

They know who follows whom.

Who communicates with whom.

Who belongs to which groups.

Who interacts with which content.

Who knows whom.

The user creates these relationships.

The platform captures them.

This creates an enormous concentration of social infrastructure.

A different architecture is conceivable.

The individual could maintain a personal representation of their relationships, with cryptographic protections and selective disclosure.

The graph does not need to be public.

It does not need to be placed on a blockchain.

It does not need to be visible to the platform.

It could remain encrypted and reveal only what the user chooses to reveal.

This is where privacy becomes more interesting than simple anonymity.

Privacy Is the Right to Choose What Is Known

Privacy is often treated as the opposite of identification.

It doesn't have to be.

A person can be strongly identified in one context while remaining pseudonymous in another.

A citizen can prove eligibility to vote without publishing their entire personal profile.

A student can prove enrolment without revealing their academic record.

A community member can prove membership without exposing their complete social network.

A person can demonstrate possession of a credential without necessarily revealing every attribute associated with it.

This is the promise of combining decentralised identity with cryptography and selective disclosure.

The goal is not:

Reveal nothing.

Nor:

Reveal everything.

It is:

Reveal what is necessary, when it is necessary, to whom it is necessary.

BrightID: Opt-In Networks

A hypothetical social network built on the principles we've stated would therefore be fundamentally different from an Internet-wide identity regime that scare so many people.

Joining the internet should always be an explicit choice.

A person could enter with a pseudonym.

They could establish a cryptographic identity.

They could connect a Nostr identity.

They could present a BrightID relationship.

They could add Verifiable Credentials.

They could build an encrypted personal social graph.

The network becomes richer as the participant chooses to establish more relationships and credentials.

But the participant is never required to transform their entire Internet existence into one universally identifiable profile.

BrightID is a good example of how a web of trust can emerge from simple community endorsements.

Identity Should Not Gate the Internet

This distinction is essential.

A future with better digital identity does not need to mean an Internet where everyone must identify themselves before accessing anything.

An open Internet and a sophisticated identity layer are compatible.

Someone should be able to read a webpage without an identity.

Browse anonymously.

Use a pseudonym.

Create an account without proving that they are a particular human being.

Identity becomes relevant when the context requires it.

A discussion forum might require nothing.

A professional community might require a credential.

A marketplace might require proof of age.

A citizen assembly might require proof of eligibility.

An election may require a substantially higher level of assurance.

These are different contexts.

Identity should therefore be modular and contextual, not universal and compulsory.

A Spectrum of Assurance

The future of identity may therefore look less like a single switch—

IDENTIFIED / ANONYMOUS

—and more like a spectrum.

At one end:

Pseudonymous participation.

At another:

Cryptographic proof of control.

Further along:

Community recognition.

Then:

Verifiable credentials.

And, where genuinely necessary:

High-assurance institutional verification.

The important principle is that increasing assurance does not necessarily have to mean increasing surveillance.

A stronger proof should not automatically require exposing more personal information than the situation requires.

Identity for Democracy

This becomes particularly significant when identity meets democratic participation.

Democracy already relies on identity.

Elections need electoral registers.

Referendums need eligibility rules.

Citizen assemblies need methods of selecting participants.

Petitions need mechanisms for determining their legitimacy.

Participatory budgeting needs participants.

Political organisations need members.

The digital environment creates opportunities to make these processes more continuous and accessible.

But it also creates new risks.

A fake account is not necessarily equivalent to a fake citizen.

A verified account is not necessarily equivalent to a unique human.

A government identity is not necessarily equivalent to a democratic identity.

These distinctions matter.

The technical challenge behind one person, one vote is not simply authentication.

It is establishing the appropriate relationship between:

identity, uniqueness, eligibility and participation.

Decentralised identity and privacy-preserving cryptography may eventually provide some of the tools required to address these problems.

They do not, by themselves, solve democracy.

They give democracy better instruments with which to experiment.

Recognition Without Absorption

There is another principle worth preserving.

Different identity networks do not need to become one network.

A decentralised identity ecosystem can contain many forms of recognition.

One network can establish uniqueness.

Another can provide a credential.

Another can establish a professional relationship.

Another can facilitate communication.

Another can support voting.

Another can provide financial infrastructure.

Interoperability allows these systems to coexist without requiring a single institution to control all of them.

This is perhaps the most important architectural principle:

Recognition without absorption.

One system can recognise evidence produced by another without owning the underlying network.

An Internet of Relationships

Perhaps the next stage of digital identity is therefore not really about identity.

It is about relationships.

The Internet has already become very good at asking:

Who are you?

The next generation may become better at asking:

Who recognises you?

And:

What exactly are they recognising?

And:

Can you prove it without revealing everything else?

And finally:

Who controls the relationship?

These questions lead towards a different conception of the social Internet.

Not a collection of isolated platform accounts.

Not one universal government identity.

Not a surveillance architecture in which every interaction requires identification.

But a web of voluntary, contextual and cryptographically verifiable relationships.

The EndorSemenT Perspective

ThEndorSemenT is exploring this territory.

Not by proposing that one identity system should become universal.

Not by arguing that anonymity should disappear.

Not by suggesting that every online interaction should be gated by identification.

Rather, we are interested in the infrastructure between identity and trust.

How can people carry evidence?

How can organisations make recognisable claims?

How can communities endorse their members?

How can credentials become portable?

How can relationships become interoperable?

How can people reveal only what is necessary?

And how can these mechanisms support not only commerce and social interaction, but also citizenship and democratic participation?

These questions are still open.

That is precisely why they are worth exploring.

Web of Trust

The Internet was built around connection.

SSI gives us a way to think about portable identity.

DIDs provide an open standard for decentralised identifiers.

Verifiable Credentials provide mechanisms for expressing and verifying claims.

Cryptography provides the mathematical foundations.

But none of these, by themselves, creates trust.

Trust emerges through relationships.

Someone issues a credential.

Someone holds it.

Someone verifies it.

Someone endorses a person.

Someone accepts that endorsement.

Someone else chooses not to.

And through these interactions, a network emerges.

A web.

A graph.

A living structure of recognition.

Perhaps the future of digital identity is therefore not a world in which everyone is permanently identified.

Perhaps it is a world in which people can carry portable evidence of who they are, what they can prove, and who is willing to recognise them.

And perhaps the most important question will no longer be:

“Are you verified?”

But:

“Who stands behind you—and what, exactly, are they willing to stand behind?”

That is where identity becomes trust.

And that is where the next Internet may begin.
